Governor Chris Christie has once again proclaimed October “Discover Jersey Arts Month,” thanks to the efforts of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and the ArtPride New Jersey Foundation. Held in conjunction with National Arts and Humanities Month, Discover Jersey Arts Month is a collective celebration of the joy, entertainment and enrichment the arts bring to the state’s diverse communities.
“Governor Christie’s proclamation of how vital the arts are to towns and cities across the state is truly important,” states Ann Marie Miller, Executive Director of ArtPride New Jersey. “The benefits of the arts reach every citizen of New Jersey. From helping our children excel in school to shaping cultural understanding, to attracting business and stimulating the economy, the arts bring communities together.”
Intended to encourage all New Jerseyans to explore the arts in their distinctive neighborhoods, Discover Jersey Arts Month honors the often overlooked economic, educational and civic engagement values that the arts impart in our lives.
“We hear repeatedly from community leaders how the arts sector drives local economies,” said Miller. “For one, the nonprofit arts community supports 80,000 jobs in the state. Audiences for public arts events in the state exceed 18 million, and stimulate more than $1.5 billion in economic activity for NJ each year.”
According to Americans for the Arts, N.J. is also home to 25,000 arts-related businesses.
“From sculpture gardens to glass museums, modern dance to classic ballet and Mozart to hip-hop, the Garden State has it all,” Miller continued. “You don’t have to go far to find great arts in N.J.”
Community members are encouraged to join the Discover Jersey Arts Month celebration and begin the practice of actively contributing to and taking part in the arts.
